Letter Counter — Count Only Letters in Any Text

This letter counter counts only alphabetic letters (A–Z, a–z) — excluding spaces, numbers, and punctuation. That's different from a regular character count, which includes everything.

Need the full character count instead? The character counter shows totals with and without spaces, including punctuation and numbers.

Why letter count matters

Letters vs. characters — what's the difference?

"Characters" includes every symbol: letters, digits, punctuation, and spaces. "Letters" counts only A–Z and a–z, ignoring everything else. For example, "Hello, World! 123" has 17 characters but only 10 letters.

All counting runs entirely in your browser. Your text is never sent to any server. See also: character counter · FAQ.

Frequently Asked Questions

Only the 26 letters of the English alphabet, A–Z (both uppercase and lowercase). Numbers, punctuation, spaces, and accented or non-Latin characters are not included in the letter count.

A character count includes every symbol — letters, digits, punctuation, and spaces. A letter count includes only alphabetic letters, so it will always be equal to or lower than the character count.

No — the letter counter matches the standard A–Z range only. Accented and non-Latin letters aren't included in the count, which is a limitation shared by most simple letter counters.

Word games like Scrabble or crossword construction, typing speed practice, and basic letter-frequency analysis all care about raw letter counts rather than total characters.
